A mum-to-be has sparked an interesting debate online, after confessing she has no plans to tell her new employer she’s pregnant any time soon.
The woman, who only recently found out she’s expecting, was offered a new job just two weeks later with a new employer, but didn’t feel the need to reveal the pregnancy when accepting the offer.
“I’ve also heard of employers discriminating against pregnant workers by not hiring them, and I wanted to avoid that.”
Things were going well for the mum-to-be, until last week when she decided to tell a few family members about both the new job and the pregnancy.
“One of them asked me if I told the boss about being pregnant. When I said no, he got disapproving and said I shouldn’t have lied about it,” she continued.
“I didn’t say anything, but I don’t think I’m in the wrong. My goal is to protect myself and the baby’s wellbeing, and having a job with maternity leave and a guarantee of work when I return will help me.”
The mum then turned to Reddit to question whether others agreed with her decision not to reveal her pregnancy to her new employer.
“You gotta look out for you. You’re under no legal obligation to disclose and they aren’t even allowed to ask either,” one Reddit user commented.
Another added: “You didn’t lie about being pregnant. You simply didn’t volunteer it, and the employer didn’t violate the law by asking. You didn’t need to disclose, plus if you are before 10 weeks along, it is still REALLY early.”
However, another disagreed: I think you’re in the wrong unless you’re really stellar and don’t count on keeping that job. You gotta do what’s best for you so it’s justified but it’s gonna suck for your coworkers if they have to pick up your slack especially if you were supposed to come in to ease up the workload.
“It also sucks for the employer if they are smaller as they would much rather have hired someone else but it shouldn’t really matter if they are a larger company. And this will probably have negative repercussions because whoever did the hiring may be more reluctant to hire younger women because this situation may remain with them.”
