Newcastle’s clash with Tottenham was suspended mid-match on Sunday as a defibrillator was rushed across the field to an unwell fan in the stands.

Both teams were ordered off the pitch by referee Andre Marriner just before half-time as medics attended to the supporter in concerning scenes at St. James’ Park.

Following the supporter’s collapse, fans in the east stand started signalling to the players and the referee for medical attention.

After left-back Sergio Reguillon and captain Harry Kane informed Marriner of the commotion, fellow Spurs duo Eric Dier and Oliver Skipp ran across the pitch to ensure a doctor came across with a defibrillator.

After consulting with security, the referee ordered the players to head back to the dressing room, with seven minutes having been added at the end if the first half.

Sky Sports pundit David Ginola, who played for both teams and suffered a heart attack himself at a charity game in 2016, outlined the importance of having defibrillators in stadiums.

“It is vital, it is vital because I hope the man or the woman is going to be fine.

“It brings back some weird memories. I’ve been talking to the lads, I haven’t been in the country for years doing that and you come back to the game and you have a heart-attack/issue in the stadium it’s been weird.

“We were watching a good game and all of a sudden it has been stopped with that. You said the defibrillator helps brilliantly, the fans in the stands.”

He continued: “You [presenter David Jones] said the defibrillator helps brilliantly, the fans in the stands to perform CPR helps massively.

“We all should be able to perform CPR to help each other.”

Jamie Redknapp added: “Fingers crossed he’s in the right place at the right time and that man or woman is saved.

“Because he might not have been as close to a defibrillator as he was today.

“Let’s just hope everything it’s okay and they can resuscitate them because at the moment it’s not about football, it’s about hopefully someone’s health.

“As David knows, speaking to him during the break, it’s made him uncomfortable it’s very difficult for everyone in the crowd.”

Ex-Newcastle man Kieran Dyer went on to say: “We knew from the players reaction soon as you see the reaction, you think what’s going on?

“Then you see the crowd and we knew, players know, I think it was Dier, he sprint the length of the pitch to get the defib over there.”

Newcastle had taken an early lead through Callum Wilson after just two minutes.

Good play from Allan Saint-Maximin allowed right-back Javier Manquillo to cross for Wilson.

But good finishes from Tanguy Ndombele and Harry Kane turned things around at St James’ Park before the incident.
